Susan Kinski's faith in stepdaughter Katya is put to the test this week. After the young nurse is shot and left for dead, the police start to question her involvement in organised crime. And as they launch an investigation, Susan is wary that spectres from Katya's dark past may have resurfaced...
"Susan's deeply concerned when she hears Katya has been shot," reveals Jackie Woodburne, who plays Susan. "Obviously, she realises something terrible has happened, but doesn't suspect Katya has done anything wrong. She's sure there must be some kind of logical explanation."
Susan rushes to the hospital, still unaware of the conflict with Guy Sykes which lead to Katya being gunned down.
"Guy's been blackmailing Katya, which is why she started stealing cars again," Jackie explains. "Realising she has to stop him, Katya arranges to meet Guy under the pretence that she has a bag of cash for him. When they come face to face, Katya pulls a gun on him and a struggle breaks out - and that's when she gets shot. Guy flees the scene, but later shows up at the hospital demanding for answers."
As the police officers begin their enquiries, Susan grants their request to search her stepdaughter's bedroom, oblivious as to what they're about to find...
"Susan cooperates with Sergeant Steiger. And is equally hopeful of getting to the bottom of the mystery," says Jackie. "But then the cops find tools that could be used for stealing cars. Naturally, they're suspicious, as several vehicles have been stolen in the area recently - so Katya becomes No 1 suspect.
"Susan goes into complete denial, and insists there must be some kind of misunderstanding," continues the actress, "But because Karl doesn't have the same connection to Katya, he's more realistic - which creates a problem when Susan continues to argue that Katya is owed the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile, nobody knows what Guy is capable of, or the danger that Katya is in. All their lives could be at risk!"
