Izzy's London Strife
Karl and Susan take a trip to London - and find Izzy sleeping on the street!
So you really thought the folk from Ramsay Street never set foot out of their iconic neighbourhood? Well, that's about to change - big time! This week, Karl (Alan Fletcher) and Susan (Jackie Woodburne) head to London for a romantic holiday, during which Karl plans to propose to his soul mate, albeit for the third time. But there's a hitch - a huge one. The couple run into Karl's former lover, Izzy (Natalie Bassingthwaighte)! Not only is Izzy heavily pregnant with Karl's child, but she's homeless to boot. "It was really great coming back to the show to film these episodes," says Natalie, who has recently been concentrating on her musical career with band Rogue Traders. "I was really looking forward to spending time with Alan and Jackie again. I wanted to do it for a couple of reasons: the storyline was fabulous, so I really liked that; and the Neighbours crew had been so great to me for the three years before that. And who doesn't want to go to the UK to film some scenes for an Australian show? We had an absolute blast!
Alan agrees that filming the series in London was a very exciting time. "It was a marvellous idea, plus we got the opportunity to perform with some well-known British personalities, which really added so much," he recalls. "The UK audience is obviously very important to Neighbours and it's very rare to be able to afford to go anywhere near there. Filming outside Melbourne is hard enough let alone going to London."
*Enjoying a romantic stroll through London, Susan and Karl come across a young pregnant woman, who's sleeping on a park bench with her face hidden under a newspaper. Susan is deeply moved by the woman's plight and leaves some money for her, unaware that she is none other than her former rival, Izzy Hoyland.
*When Izzy sits up seconds after Susan's gift, she is stunned to see the couple walking away.
*Izzy has been having an affair with a married English football star called Pete Gartside (Daniel Schutzmann), but she's determined to get her life back on track. Pete, aware that Karl is the real father of Izzy's unborn child, urges her to tell Karl the truth once and for all. What will Izzy do?
*Susan can't believe her eyes when she picks up a local tabloid and discovers Izzy is front-page news in the city. Soon after, Susan runs into Izzy again. When Izzy informs Susan that her boyfriend has now deserted her, Susan kindly promises to help her - much to Karl's surprise.
*Karl finally manages to get his act together and pop the question to Susan while they're on the London Eye. "Will you do me the honour of becoming my wife again?" he asks. "The third time has got to be lucky!"
*Izzy goes into labour during Karl and Susan's wedding ceremony! Despite the fact that he had abandoned his medical career, Karl quickly returns to his former role of Dr Kennedy to deliver Izzy's baby. But will he ever find out that he is the child's father?
