Susan’s surprise confession
Karl does a u-turn when Susan tells him the truth about Izzy’s baby
Unable to bear the burden of her secret any longer, Susan comes clean with Karl – she tells him he’s the father of London-based Izzy’s newborn baby, Holly! “Having seen the child being born, Susan can’t hide the truth anymore,” says her portrayer, Jackie Woodburne. Initially, Karl (Alan Fletcher) is furious with his wife for keeping it from him. After all, they’ve only just returned home from London where little Holly made her unexpected arrival during Karl and Susan’s dramatic wedding ceremony! “There are so many levels of concern for Susan,” Jackie explains. “They just got to this place where, after everything that’s happened between them, they decided to remarry. She feels connected to Karl and she trusts him again, but now there’s this new issue. I think she feels that, if she doesn’t tell him, it will always be something between them. It’s a real dilemma for her.”
Despite the fact that Susan begs Karl not to make contact with Izzy, Toadie (Ryan Moloney) convinces him to do just that. However, it’s clear that Izzy (Natalie Bassingthwaighte) doesn’t want Karl to have any part in their daughter’s life. “A child is such a strong connection, and Susan’s thinking Karl might decide to try and win Izzy back and make a family with this new child,” Jackie reflects. “Susan’s quite relieved when Izzy doesn’t want Karl involved. She thinks, ‘I’ve told him about the situation and Izzy will look after the child in a happy, loving relationship with her boyfriend, Pete (Daniel Schutzmann) – so everyone comes out a winner’.”
Later in the week, however, Karl drops a bombshell of his own to Susan: he’s returning to England to become acquainted with his newborn daughter! “Now that he knows the facts, he wants to meet the child and spend time with her,” Jackie reveals. Karl promises he’ll be back in a week, but Susan can’t help wondering if this really will be the case. “Susan doesn’t want to force the issue because she knows that as soon as you push, someone will pull,” Jackie says. “She just has to let him go so that he can work it out for himself. She’s fearful for her future and thinks, ‘What happens when he gets there and Izzy decides to weave her evil spell again?’” Watch this space!
