Triple Shock!
A pregnancy, a paternity scandal and a possible drug-related tragedy are on the cards for Carmella
Carmella receives life-changing news this week. Taken to hospital after suffering a dizzy spell, she is stunned to learn she’s pregnant! What’s more, the father of her unborn baby is her ex-lover Oliver who is now happily involved with Elle. But, in a shock development, Carmella also learns that her recent addiction to prescription pills may have harmed her unborn child! Natalie gives TV WEEK all the details on her character’s predicament.
How did you feel when you learnt Carmella is pregnant?
Oh my God! Only in soapie land. Everything happens in such a short space of time. But I was so excited – I love the idea of Carmella having a baby! I think she deserves some happiness. Having a baby is a beautiful thing and should be celebrated. And I’d love to work with a baby on the show. I love kids, but I’m not ready to have one of my own yet!
What about Carmella? How does she feel when she gets the news?
It’s certainly a bit of a shock but, coming from a strict Catholic family, there’s no way she’d consider not going through with the pregnancy.
When Carmella breaks the news to her sister, Rosie, what’s her reaction?
Rosie automatically assumes Ringo is the father, when in fact nothing happened between him and Carmella.
Will Carmella come to terms with the fact she’s going to be a mum?
She will. Once the initial shock wears off, it actually becomes quite an exciting time for her. Her maternal side kicks in very quickly and she really starts to look forward to having a baby.
How does Carmella react to the news that her addiction may have had an impact on her unborn child?
She’s incredibly fearful for the wellbeing of the baby because she was abusing the pills; she wasn’t eating properly and really wasn’t doing any of the right things. She’s so worried that she may have harmed her own baby. She feels terribly guilty. This is so scary for Carmella. She’s really mad at herself for doing what she did – abusing her body the way she did.
How will she break the news of her surprise pregnancy to Oliver?
She knows she has to do this, and Rosie’s constantly on her back about it saying, “You need to tell him, you need to let him know he’s the father.” But she just can’t bring herself to tell Oliver. She then decides not to tell him anything until she’s certain that their baby will survive. This is her excuse for getting out of it, whereas the real reason she doesn’t want to tell him is because she doesn’t want to ruin things between him and Elle. She knows that they’ve finally sorted out their problems and are doing well together. But that could all change.
Oh, baby…
Over the years, there have been many shock pregnancies in Erinsborough. Do you remember these storylines?
- Back in 1992, Phoebe (Simone Robertson) slept with fellow student Todd (Kristian Schmid), resulting in the conception of baby Hope. Tragically, Todd never got to see his daughter – he was hit by a van as he was racing to prevent Phoebe terminating the pregnancy. When she heard the news, she decided to have the baby after all and raised it with Stephen (Lochie Daddo).
- In 2002, Lyn, who had four grown-up children, announced that she was having another baby. She gave birth to son Oscar in 2003.
- Lori (Michelle Ang) was shocked when she fell pregnant to Connor after just one night with him. Fleeing to her native New Zealand in 2003, she later gave birth to daughter Maddy.
- Last year, Sky became pregnant after cheating on her boyfriend Dylan with her art lecturer JP and then sleeping with Dylan's brother, Stingray. After months of uncertainty over her baby's paternity, she learnt that Dylan was baby Kerry's father.
Ringo Rejected
While Carmella is desperately hoping her unborn child is healthy, Ringo is still reeling from the fact that Carmella wants nothing to do with him. Indeed, Ringo makes a massive fool of himself at Sky's farewell party when he publicly declares his feelings for Carmella - only for her to reveal that she was never in love with him! "I really felt for Ringo when I was acting out this scene," Sam says. "He's in front of Ramsay Street in a hospital gown and basically unable to walk. It's just the ultimate embarrassment for him." Now, shattered by Carmella's rejection, Ringo makes the decision to leave Erinsborough and return to the family home with his mother. "He just feels so embarrassed and as though he doesn't fit in anymore in the street," Sam says. Will we see Ringo in Ramsay Street again?

Toadie in court
Did Toadie's drinking cause the post-wedding bus crash - and will Susan's testimony help or harm his case?
Ever since Toadie was found to have been driving under the influence when the bus crash occured, he has worried about his fate. This week, he finally has his day in court. Susan is one of the wedding guests called to the stand. Under oath, there's a chance her testimony will lead to Toadie's conviction. Toadie's legal career hangs in the balance as he waits for the judge's verdict. Can Rosie successfully plead his case?

Hot Goss - Neighbours Relaunch Special
- The Neighbours cast and friends gathered recently to celebrate the soap's relaunch at Eve nightclub in Melbourne. And fans will be happy to hear the show is safe. It was announced at the party that the series has signed on with Network Ten for another three years.
- Natalie Bassingthwaighte and her bandmates from the Rogue Traders rocked the Neighbours party. When the band belted out "In Love Again", Pippa Black, Carla Bonner, Natalie Blair and Dan O'Connor all raced to the floor. Little Fletcher O'Leary even performed a few breakdance-style caterpillars.
- Rumours are flying that love is in the air for castmates Natalie Blair and David Hoflin. At the Neighbours bash, David and Natalie (who split from actor Beau Brady some months ago) made a concerted effort to keep their distance, but reliable sources inform me that they're definitely an item.
- Another Neighbour said to have a new, high-profile boyfriend is the lovable Natalie Saleeba. I heard whispers that the Perth actress is dating Aussie rock star Tim Rogers from You Am I. The pair met through a mutual friend a few months ago and hit it off straightaway. Tim is currently in the US promoting the band's new album, so I'll update you on the blossoming romance when he returns.
- Which Ramsay Street starlet recently decided she prefers girls to boys and is telling her friends that she's a lesbian? Sorry, we'll have to keep this one under wraps.
- Australia was first introduced to Dan O'Connor as a finalist on Australian Idol, and it seems that the Neighbours star is keen to get back to his singing roots. Dan told me he's considering leaving acting to persue his first love, singing. He's also thinking of heading to England to get a feel for the UK music scene and weigh up his options. I'll keep you posted.
